🌍✈️ We’re Heading to Rio! Energi Simulation Annual Summit 2025 🇧🇷

Exciting news from the Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering at Heriot-Watt University! We’re proud to share that Professor Eric Mackay, who holds the Energi Simulation Chair in CCUS and Reactive Flow Simulation, will be attending the Energi Simulation Annual Summit 2025 in Rio de Janeiro.

He’ll be joined by five of his PhD students, each of whom will be presenting a poster on their latest research in subsurface energy systems. This is a great opportunity to share our work with the global subsurface energy community and learn from others working at the forefront of the field.

Here’s what our team will be presenting:

📌 Ahmadreza Shojaee
Numerical Study of Biological and Geochemical Reactions during Hydrogen Storage in Subsurface Porous Media
This work explores the complex interplay between microbial activity and geochemical reactions during underground hydrogen storage, and how it affects purity, recoverability, and long-term integrity.

📌 Ahmed Wagia Alla
Improving Simulation Accuracy of CO₂ Storage in Residual Oil Zones and Depleted Hydrocarbon Reservoirs
A modelling study focused on the impact of initialization techniques and lateral permeability on storage forecasts and CO₂–CH₄ mixing behaviour.

📌 Mozhdeh Igder
Evaluating Solubility and Retention of Phosphonate Inhibitors for Optimised Scale Control in Subsurface Applications
This research investigates how phosphonate scale inhibitors behave in different brines and temperatures, with the goal of improving squeeze treatment performance.

📌 Patricia Gusmão
The Impact of Reservoir Properties on the Sulphate Content of Produced Brine in Carbonate Reservoirs under Seawater-Alternating-Gas Injection
A study combining reservoir simulation and geochemical modelling to better predict brine composition under CO₂-WAG conditions in carbonate systems.

📌 Shabnam Mohammadi
Silicate Scale Prevention in Geothermal Brine Systems: Comparing the Mechanism and Performance of Two Polymer-Based Inhibitors
A detailed laboratory study comparing two polymeric inhibitors under geothermal conditions to evaluate their efficiency and inhibition mechanisms.

We’re proud to represent Energi Simulation Centre at Heriot-Watt at this year’s summit. Many thanks to Energi Simulation for supporting this incredible platform for collaborative and impactful research.
