CMG CCS Training and Workshop at Heriot-Watt University

On Monday 9 March and Tuesday 10 March, a CMG software training course focused on CCS modelling was held at Heriot-Watt University.

During the 1.5 day training, participants worked through several important aspects of CCS simulation using CMG tools. The course covered topics such as:

  • Using Builder for CCS model setup
  • Performing multi-physics CCS simulations
  • CO₂ solubility modelling
  • Geomechanics coupling
  • Geochemical reactions
  • Permeability hysteresis modelling

The course was delivered by Marco Misenta, Varun Pathak, and Gemma Jones whose clear explanations and practical demonstrations made the training extremely valuable. Many thanks to them for their effort and to CMG for organising and supporting this course.

After the training, the event continued with an afternoon CCS workshop featuring several interesting presentations:

  • Eric Mackay and Patricia Gusmão presented technical insights on halite precipitation and geochemical processes in CCS systems.
  • Varun Pathak introduced several new features of CMG-GEM for CCS modelling, including the Area of Review (AoR) concept and dynamic grid capabilities, which can reduce simulation runtime while maintaining model accuracy.
  • Habib Al Khatib and Elodie Morgan from SpotLight discussed how strategic 4D imaging combined with CMG modelling results, instead of full-field 4D seismic monitoring, can reduce costs while improving model reliability.
  • Finally, Ellen Mitchell from Sproule ERCE reminded us of the most essential aspect of any project in the real world: financing, highlighting the financial perspectives behind CCS developments.

After the workshop, we headed to the Marriott Hotel for a CMG Happy Hour, where we continued the CCS theme by injecting some dissolved CO₂ into ourselves and networking with colleagues from academia and industry.

Overall, it was a very insightful event, combining practical simulation training with broader discussions on the technical and economic aspects of carbon capture and storage.

Thank you again to the organisers, instructors, and speakers for a great workshop.
