PHREEQC Course at Heriot-Watt University

The Energi Simulation team at Heriot-Watt University is pleased to announce that we will host a PHREEQC short course in hydrogeochemistry and hydrogeochemical transport modelling on 17–21 November 2025.

The course will be delivered on campus by Dr Tony Appelo, internationally recognised hydrogeochemist and co-author of “Geochemistry, Groundwater and Pollution.”

This five-day training introduces the powerful capabilities of PHREEQC for modelling practical hydrogeochemical systems. Through lectures and hands-on computer exercises, participants will explore a range of topics including:

  • Modelling of laboratory experiments such as cation exchange and pyrite oxidation
  • CO₂ dissolution and gas-mixture equilibria at high pressures using the Peng–Robinson equation of state
  • Hydrochemical reactions during artificial recharge, aquifer storage, and in-situ treatments
  • Inverse modelling of groundwater composition and kinetic reaction modelling

The course is designed for researchers, postgraduate students, and professionals interested in reactive transport modelling, water–rock interactions, and geochemical process simulation.

We look forward to welcoming Dr Tony Appelo and all participants to this advanced and engaging course at Heriot-Watt University.
